Special Care at Milwaukee Catholic Home is designed for the resident with the primary diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease or dementia-related behaviors. This unit provides an innovative, compassionate and caring environment. We offer safe and secure living arrangements allowing each resident to maximize his or her level of independence.
The goal of this unit is to create an unrestrictive environment for residents. We provide an atmosphere in which an individual can function as independently as possible. Individuals are given increased structure throughout the day and increased time to complete obtainable tasks, such as dressing, bathing, eating and recreational activities, with assistance from our devoted staff. This unit was specifically designed for individuals who otherwise may not reach their full potential.
The recreation department works in collaboration with nursing and social services to provide a continuous structure for residents. Activities focus on the social, cognitive, physical and spiritual needs of our residents. Some activities allow residents to use the memory that he or she has retained, while others focus on making our resident feel or be successful.
Prior to residency a staff member will complete an assessment of your loved one to determine if our Special Care Unit is appropriate for his or her needs.
The Special Care Staff consists of 24 hour-a-day nurses, certified nursing assistants, social workers, and a full time recreation therapist. Certified occupational therapist assistants work seven days a week to provide and enhance the structured activities of the unit. Our staff is specifically trained in the care of loved ones with dementia and is dedicated to providing quality care in a home-like setting.
Each room is equipped with a memory box at its entrance that can be filled with mementos. A personal history is placed in a frame next to the memory box. Memories of the past are a vital part of who we are today. In times of forgetfulness or confusion, the personal mementos in memory boxes help our resident identify his or her room and allow the staff to comfort the resident by sharing past memories and achievements. |
